The Transmission Improvements Group (TIG) is identifying incremental, cost-effective solutions to known transmission issues within the general geographic area covered by the Northwest Power Pool. TIG’s final report is posted on the Steering Committee page, as well as TIG’s Going-Forward Cost Estimate and Benefits Study. If you are a Northwest utility that operates a control area or has close to or more than $ 50 million in net transmission plant, you are invited to enter into the Developmental Memorandum of Intent which is posted on the Steering Committee page. Click here for executed copies of the Memorandum of Intent.

The Northwest can take concrete steps now to improve access to and the efficiency of the region’s transmission system that can be implemented within the next two-to-three years. These improvements fall into five areas:

  1. Common OASIS
  2. Regional Transmission Planning and Expansion
  3. Reliability and Security
  4. Market Monitoring
  5. Flow-Based ATC

The Work Groups will develop proposals in enough detail to allow for a reasonable comparison between the proposals and the Grid West proposal. To the extent possible, proposals developed by the Work Groups will utilize existing organizations and contracts and avoid creating new institutions. Further information can be found in the TIG Participation and Funding Agreement and the Work Group charters.

BPA and the Washington PUD Association issued a press release March 24, 2005 that addresses the regional power grid and the need to update it.
